A step towards justice and redress for the victims

 

The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) welcomes the arrest of Ali Kushayb the leader of the Janjaweed militias in the Darfur region of Sudan after he voluntarily surrendered to the International Criminal Court (ICC) while he was in the Central African Republic.

ACIJLP believes that this step is to strengthen the role of the International Criminal Court achieving criminal justice and victory for the victims. ACIJLP also stresses the importance of continuing efforts in support of combating impunity especially for those involved in committing the most serious crimes.

Pursuant to the arrest warrant issued against him and others in April 2007 from the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court Kushayb was detained on suspicion that he may be responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur region (Sudan) during the armed outbreak in August 2002 between the government of Sudan the Popular Defense Forces and the Janjaweed  militia as part of the counterinsurgency in Darfur. The conflict of which casualties were civilians from the Fur Zaghawa and Masalit tribes fallen as a result of a large-scale organized attack in which war crimes crimes against humanity and genocide were committed.

Since it is believed that Kushayb is taking the individual criminal responsibility and according to the arrest warrant issued against him hes facing 22 charges of crimes against humanity (murder forced transfer of people rape persecution  torture severe deprivation of liberty  and inhumane acts) and 28 others related to war crimes (killing attacks against civilians  rape assault on human dignity looting and destruction of property.
